Who was the first female recipient of Bharat Ratna?

The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of our country. Instituted in 1954, the award is conferred "in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex.

The award was started by former President Rajendra Prasad on January, 1954. At that time only the alive people were eligible for their national service. Later these criteria were changed. The number of annual awards is restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year. The award does not carry any monetary grant. The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Ministerto the President.

Indira Gandhi became the first woman to receive the Bharat Ratna award in 1971. She was also the first woman Prime Minister of India and served from 1966 to 1977. Indira Gandhi was named as the "Woman of the Millennium" in a poll which was organised by BBC in 1999.
Criticism: As the recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister of India to the President, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was criticized for the honour.
Also these great personalities:
Mother Teresa - 1979

M.S Subbulakshmi - 1998

Lata Mangeshkar - 2001
